William Beattie Monahan
1904 - 1948
Father Monahan was ordained Deacon in 1894 and Priest a year later. He served
as curate of Saint Mark's in Birmingham from 1894 to 1896. He then moved
to Balsall Heath until 1898. From there he went to Saint Michael, Coventry
before moving to Worcester in 1902. Father Monahan was responsible for introducing
the catholic faith to the parish. During his long incumbancy he wrote several
papers and these, together with a longer biography, are accessible on this

Harold Kenneth Sly
1949 - ?
Father Sly took over as Parish Priest the year after the death of
Father Monahan. He was born in 1915. Following his training at Kelham
Theological College (1934), he was ordained Deacon in 1938 and went
to serve as Curate at Wigston Magna. He was Ordained Priest in 1939
but remained at Wigston Magna until 1941 when he moved to Saint Edmund's
in Dudley. He was there for 2 years before moving to Saint Stephen's
in Redditch where he served until 1947. In 1949 Father Sly came to
Old Saint Martin's. He was our Parish Priest until 1957 when he took
the living as Vicar of Hampton-in-Arden.
In 1963, Father Sly made the headlines when he reported to the Police
his suspicions that a bogus 'do it yourself' wedding had taken place in
the small church at Oldberrow near Solihull. The Times of 20 July 1963
reported the incident under the headline "Bogus Wedding In Village
Church." The case came to court later that year and was again reported
in the Times on 8 October. It transpired that Father Sly's suspicions
had been well founded and that a man wearing a cassock hired from a theatrical
costumier had indeed performed a 'wedding ceremony.'
